Orlando Passes City Ordinance Prohibiting Feeding Homeless…

homeless_small_125_150.jpgIn arguably one of the most questionable civic decisions in years, Orlando’s City Commissioners recently passed an ordinance regulating the feeding of large groups of homeless people in Orlando’s downtown park.

In article written by the Associated Press’ Todd Lewan, it was reported that “those who wished to feed more than 25 hungry individuals at parks within a 2-mile radius of City Hall could do so, but only if they obtained a “Large Group Feeding Permit” from the parks department–and no one would be granted more than two feeding permits a year. No exceptions.”

And while Orlando’s homeless population has grown to an estimated 8,500 people in recent years, even the most hardened of hearts would have to question this Draconian tactic.

According to a post by Scott Maxwell on an Orlando Sentinel blog, apparently even Jay Leno took to making fun of the new policy against mass feedings of the homeless around Lake Eola.

Leno: “It’s now illegal to feed the homeless in Orlando, Florida. Have you seen the fat people walking around Disneyworld? We should make illegal to feed them.”

All kidding aside, Orlando’s city policy is cruel and insensitive–and there’s no excuse for compromising human dignity or prohibiting simple acts of kindness.
